The Bout Report before Christmas

‘Twas the bout before Christmas and all through the hall, there were skaters preparing and blocking in walls. And what better way to kick off the festive season than a double header of high quality Roller Derby at Horizon Leisure Centre in Havant.

On Saturday 2nd December, a crowd of around 250 supporters, officials and skaters gathered for some hard hitting, fast paced, action packed roller derby, with Portsmouth Roller Wenches A Team (currently ranked 97th in Europe, 20th in the U.K.) taking on Bath Roller Derby Girls, and PRW B Team (currently ranked 228th in Europe) taking on Southampton City Rollers.

There were some impressive performances from Bath in the opening game with Geordie Racer demonstrating stand out jamming skills. But the strength of Portsmouth’s blocking walls (with notable displays of explosive strength from The Duchess of Crutches) and the speed of the Wenches’ jammers meant the bout ended with a Portsmouth win on home turf of 308 to Bath’s 69.

The crowd were then delighted to welcome the half time entertainment, a poptastic performance by local dance troupe and body positive activists Neptune Girls.

Then it was PRW B Team’s time to take to the track. A special shout out to the crossover skaters, Fancy Nancy and Smash Hips, who despite having played a full game already looked fresh and focussed in their second match of the day.

It was a thrilling game with Southampton City Rollers demonstrating impressive skills with Brimful of Smasha’s notable performances as fleet footed lead jammer, and Lipsy with an impressive series of crunching blocks.

Mimi Menace (nominated best jammer in the player awards by Bath) shone in her first open door game. An impressed member of the audience commented on how, “She used low positioning and fast feet to become lead jammer, the joy lighting up her face [appropriately for the season] like a Christmas Tree.”

Beth ‘n’ Destruction also showed fierce alacrity. Points won by Southampton City Rollers were hard earned.

In the end the win went to PRW B Team with 218 to SCR’s 188 points.

Both games were thrilling to watch and all four teams demonstrated how skilful, entertaining and sports(wo)man-like roller derby can be.
